Helping you successfully conduct business with the Japanese as well as increase your sales in Japan
Contrary to popular belief, legal barriers and tariff restrictions are not the biggest obstacles for the U.S. firms trying to enter the Japanese market. In fact, the Japanese market is equally as open as the U.S. market; or rather the Japanese market is more open than the U.S. market.
Japan is the most reliable strategic and one of the largest trade partners of the U.S. Besides, it is one of the largest markets for most products and services outside the U.S. There is no reason for you not to pursue Japan business.
Many U.S. companies have been successfully doing business in Japan. All such companies have one thing in common. They approached the Japanese people and the Japanese market well prepared. They did their homework regarding what you should not do. They also adjusted themselves to some extent to the way that the Japanese people conduct business. It is not important to learn how to use the Japanese chopsticks for preparations for your first trip to Japan. You can ask for knife and fork in the restaurants in Japan. It is not important to learn how to speak Japanese on your first trip to Japan. You should not speak any Japanese at your first meeting with the Japanese. It is rather dangerous if they misunderstand that you are able to understand the Japanese language because it will make them very cautious and the meetings throughout your stay with them will become very unproductive. If you have the time to learn the Japanese language, you should learn how to be patient because developing business relationships with the Japanese companies usually takes a long time, sometimes one year to two years especially when you want to appoint a good exclusive distributor or establish a joint venture in Japan.
The most important thing is to know the unique way of the Japanese business practice and to learn how to ask the Japanese businessmen to compromise and change their way closer to your way. The Japanese are very thorough, accurate and demand proof. Unless everything is ready, they will not start.?However, Japan is still the second largest economic power after the U.S.
